Kristiansund, Sveggvika and the Atlantic Road

Out on the laguna - in front of my hut - the fishing boats are slowly drifting out to sea. The air is fresh and clean with a nice smell of ocean. Only ten minutes from Kristiansund city center, around an hour to Molde and 30 minutes from the spectacular Atlantic road, is a nice place called Sveggvika. Right now Sveggvika is not much more than a construction site and some interesting plans, but in a few month it is going to be an vibrant and exiting tavern and apartment complex.

I have been living in Sveggvika for a long weekend and with Svegvika as a base I have explored Kristiansund, the Atlantic Road, taken a ton of pictures of the ocean and the rough nature in the west of Norway and taken a closer look on the local klippfisk production.

The Atlantic road is a spectacular sight. I have seen this road many times in several car commercial's and it is refered to as one of the most spectacular roads in the world. And you know what? – after visiting, and driving the road - I think so too.

I’m driving on the step bridges, and they look like they are leading strait in to heaven, like giant ramps. The ocean beats in to the bridge-foundation and throw's itself up alongside the bridge. The elements are so close, the wind, the waives, and in the air above us an eagle is circling.

As you explore Averøya you see these large klippfisk drying constructions (salted dried codfish) everywhere and during the spring and summer you can also see codfish hanging on them. The smell is – well, if you like klipfisk - good . It makes my mouth go wet from thinking of Bakalao.

Bacalao is a Portuguese dish made with Norwegian dried salted codfish or klippfisk as we say in Norwegian. The tradition says that Norwegian dry codfish was introduced to Spanish fish buyers in Kristiansund early 1800, and later became an important part of the Spanish and Portuguese tradition. All I can say is that it taste incredible, I hope Sveggvika will have Bakalao on the menu during summer.

Rannveig, the owner and manager of Svegvika, is an energetic woman with great plans for the place. With her enthusiasm and the very good location. Sveggvika is going to be a place of importance on Vestlandet. I hope to report back with more information during the summer..
