I arrived in Røros early in the morning after driving from Trondheim. about 2 and a half hour drive. And I ate my breakfast at a very nice cafè and bakery called Trygstad Bakeri in Kjerkegata, the main street in the old town. The mountain settlement of Røros is one of Europe's oldest preserved wooden towns. And in 1980 it was awarded a place on UNESCO's list of world Heritage sites. The beautiful houses and backyards, the church and smeltehytta(smelter building) are certainly worth a visit and you should also take the guided tour in the melter building and look at the models of how the mining activity took place and the brilliant ingenuity they used to get the power from the water wheels into the mines. Copper ore was brought in from the surrounding mines to the melting building an all around Røros you see the enormous rock piles(slagghauger) which is the leftover rocks after the copper extraction proses. The mining in Røros started around 1646 and stopped for the last time in 1977.
Røros is a very nice place with a very interesting history, definitely worth a visit :)
