Nordland line. The train stretch from Trondheim to Bodø. Lonely Planet has rated this night-train stretch to be one of the world's most beautiful, and that is not so strange. We drive north under the midnight sun. A cup of coffee makes it a little easier to stay awake. The trains on the Nordland track is old and ready for renewal, but the cafe cart is cozy and comfortable a good place to sit later in the night hours, the windows are large and provide a perfect view into the changing landscape and soon, we pass the Arctic Circle. The new sleeping wagons are very nice and comfortable.
It's almost midnight in Trondheim, we have just received the key to the sleeping cabin, lifted the bag on the shelf and now we are heading for the cafe car to get us a snack before we go to sleep. During the night nordlansbanen will bring us beyond the polar circle and the railway end station, Bodø. Outside it is bright light. I'm trying to stay awake, taking in all the impressions, experience the rough nature bathed in the midnight sun, but eventually I fall asleep. 10 hours later, the train rolls into Bodø Station.
I was in love. We had spent the whole day in Trondheim and at 23.30 our train from Trondheim to Bodø was leaving We had a sleeping cabin, just for the two of us, it couldn't be more romantic.
We travel across the Salt Mountain and passed the Arctic Circle - all lightened by the midnight sun - before we got into the typical north-norway landscape and to the Norwegian railway end-station in the north, Bodø.
Trondheim is a beautiful and charming city. Full of interesting architecture, old wooden houses and - not least - the great Gothic cathedral Nidarosdomen.
We arrived in Trondheim as part of our long train journey with the NSB, In Trondheim, we had one night and a day before we went on with the night-train to Bodø on Nordlansbanen –the railway from Trondheim to Bodø.
The conductor blows her whistle, and the train starts mowing from Oslo Central-station toward Bergen. This train journey passes through a beautiful mountain pass and reaches on its highest point 1222 Meters above sea level.
