It's almost midnight in Trondheim, we have just received the key to the sleeping cabin, lifted the bag on the shelf and now we are heading for the cafe car to get us a snack before we go to sleep. During the night nordlansbanen will bring us beyond the polar circle and the railway end station, Bodø. Outside it is bright light. I'm trying to stay awake, taking in all the impressions, experience the rough nature bathed in the midnight sun, but eventually I fall asleep. 10 hours later, the train rolls into Bodø Station.
Except for the spectacular nature and the midnight sun Bodø is not much to see. However the midnight sun, the nature and the fact that you have to cross the arctic circle to get there, makes Bodø worth a visit. For a while ago I wrote about the train journey from Trondheim to Bodø, and of course, when you find yourself in Bodø you need a Place to stay.
Most of the hotels in Bodø seems old and worn down, but there are two very good alternatives. Radisson BLU and Thon Hotel Nordlys (northern light). On my latest visit to Bodø I spent a Night at Thon Hotel.
The hotel is located right in city center, just a few minutes from the cathedral and town square. The hotel is modern, minimalist, and affordable. A nice option to explore Trondheim
The hotel has a nice Cafe and restaurant where you can relax with something good in the evening and eat breakfast in the morning.
The hotel - just like our experience of Trondheim in general, are characterized by very good and attentive service. Comfort Trondheim helped to make our stay in Trondheim even better.
The wind is blowing in my face and the boat is cruising over the water. I look up and i se the wonderfull Seven Sisters! They are only a few meters from the boat and i can feel the mist from the water running down the hillside. On the other side i see the Suitor which is also called the Wooer. These are two of the most famous waterfalls in Geirangerfjorden, which is actualy on the UNESCO Heritage list. The Boat takes us all the way to the end of the fjord before it turnes. Whereever you turn your head there are huge mountains.
I was in love. We had spent the whole day in Trondheim and at 23.30 our train from Trondheim to Bodø was leaving We had a sleeping cabin, just for the two of us, it couldn't be more romantic.
We travel across the Salt Mountain and passed the Arctic Circle - all lightened by the midnight sun - before we got into the typical north-norway landscape and to the Norwegian railway end-station in the north, Bodø.
Trondheim is a beautiful and charming city. Full of interesting architecture, old wooden houses and - not least - the great Gothic cathedral Nidarosdomen.
We arrived in Trondheim as part of our long train journey with the NSB, In Trondheim, we had one night and a day before we went on with the night-train to Bodø on Nordlansbanen –the railway from Trondheim to Bodø.
The train runs through the most incredible landscapes. From Oslo, through Hamar along the lake Mjøsa - the largest freshwater lake in Norway and over the Dovre plateau, where, if you are lucky still can see musk, and finally to Trondheim city.
The train is hurtling forward, Mjøsa Lake is sparkling in the beautiful weather and over Dovre, we can still see snow on the peaks.
To travel by train in Norway is comfortable. And if you order NSB comfort seats it is even better.

Hilsen www.ellens.no
